Question What rifle for 1000yd competitive shooting.?
300 includes scope or micrometer open sights Some background- I have been shooting for a few years now, mainly pistol and air rifle, and am looking into long range competitive shooting. Before I go to our local gun smith I would ask your advise into what rifle/caliber I should be looking into so the guy doesn't see me coming from a mile away lol. I would prefer not to spend more then $2000.00 but if necessary I would go as high as $3000.00 (This includes scope) I know the rifle doesn't make the shooter and all that but a good quality rifle will help eh. I appreciate your your input. Thanks. 1) Match Rifle Division not Service I plan on shooting Palma as well 2) I own plenty of land so access to 1000 yards+ of open land is not a issue. 3) I have been shooting for a long time just never competitively with rifles so im not a complete idiot here. I dont -plan on shooting on a 200 yard range with this.

Best Answer Hello Anona! Thank you for a very intelligent question re: 1000 yard shooting! Before I offer a suggestion, I must ask a few questions! First, do you intend to shoot in the Service Rifle division or the Match Rifle Division? Second, do you plan to shoot just 1000 yard, or do you anticipate shooting PALMA matches (800, 900, and 1000 yards), also? If you are planning on shooting in the Service Rifle division, you will be shooting iron sights exclusively! Scopes are not permitted on service rifles. If you shoot in this division, your rifle choices are drastically limited! *Tried and true are the M1 Garand and the M1A/M14. If you go with the Garand, you will have to start building your rifle. You can get a complete M1 for about $600 ... and all you will want is the receiver! Once you build the receiver, you will need a heavy barrel (I suggest chambered for the .308 round), match grade 1/2 minute sights, and a new stock that is glass bedded. I suggest the ,308 round because the air space in the .30-06 allows unequal powder orientation, hence variations in bullet performance. *The best "off the rack" rifle for 1000 yd. is Springfield Armory's M1A. If you purchase either the M1A National Match or the M1A Super Match, you will have a competitive rifle once you pay the shop owner! Either of these rifles will already have the heavy barrel, the NM sights, and the glassbedded stock! *The last rifle I would suggest is the AR in .223. While I was able to compete, there was reports of the services "blowing up" numerous rifles while trying to get them to shoot a round that remained ballistic at 1000 yds. The key to successful 1000 yd shooting is the ability to keep the round above 1150 fps at 1000 yards! If you shoot Match Rifle Divison (or PALMA) for that matter, you are also building your rifle. PALMA rifles must be .308s, have at least a 26" barrel, and have (if I remember correctly) a 1 in 11" twist, by the rules! If you are shooting just 1000 yds, you have a free hand! Either way, you will need a good set of micrometer click sights and a scope, since there are both iron sight matches and any sight matches! As long as you can keep your round ballistic at 1000 yds, you are rather free to select a caliber, as long as it is .30 or smaller. NRA rules prohibit use of a caliber greater than .30 (at least that was the rule before my crippling accident). Remember, each match is 20 rounds for record plus unlimited sighters at 1000 yards, so you do not want to choose a cartridge that is too punishing or brutal to your shoulder! The .308 is very kind to the shoulder at the 1000 yard line! I have two rifles designated for 1000 yd matches. A Springfield Armory M1A National Match and a Remington Model 700 Varmint Special that I have "built-up"! My M1A is stock. My Remington 700 Varmint Special is a .308 in a Boyd Varmint Stock, with an upgraded trigger, Redfield PALMA micrometer sights, and currently a Weaver KT15 scope which will be upgraded with a Weaver T series scope! One point you need to remember, any bolt rifle you use will need at least a Varmint rifle barrel profile (at the minimum), if not a bull barrel! The Varmint or bull barrel reduces the barrel's harmonic vibrations, which keeps the bullet groups small! The M1A cost me just under $2000 about 8 years ago. The Remington 700, with the upgrades, has cost me about $2000, also. Winchester use to market a Model 70T Target rifle, ready for the firing line once you added sights! It was available in .30-06 and .270 (at the minimum, since those are the match rifles my gunsmith owned and used! If you could find a Model 70T, you would be ahead of the game! If the rifle you select has a hunting contour barrel, you will not be competitive! In lieu of a Winchester Model 70T, I would recommend a Remington 700 Varmint rifle ... either an SPS or a VLS! Good luck and good shooting!

SKEWED… a tantalizing mystery thriller that opens with a bang, turns lives upside down, and delivers a shocking jolt of a finale... Janie Perkins rocks a warped relationship with cameras. Forced in front of them as an infant under grim circumstances, she now hides behind them as a crime scene photographer with a bad habit. But for a girl born to a waitress in a coma—courtesy of a bullet from her famous father—warped relationships are the norm. When Janie receives two photos of her mother's crime scene, she gains a dire perspective on the decades-old death, one that threatens to upend her life and resurrect the wrath of the long- dormant Haiku Killer. With her twin brother running for office and her own problems rising to the fore, Janie finds herself in the dreaded spotlight once again. These recent photos won't help matters. Enlisting the help of a unique crime consultant, a newbie detective, and her estranged father, Janie pries off the layers of deceit that marked her mother's final day. But as an unwelcome truth finally comes into focus, Janie may wish she'd left things undeveloped. Will she now pay the ultimate price for finally righting her skewed existence?
